am i guarded therefore you’re distant?
or are you distant therefore im guarded?

if only we could introduce
the you: in the first flush of things
to the me: who now knows better

maybe they’d hit it off.
& argue with less pointed words
& carry smaller pockets of blame
& just hold each other closer
than we thought to.
